    Urgent update

    Saturday, May 8, 2010
    Friends and Family,
One thing we are learning on this most incredible journey we are on, is that there are ups and downs, every day, sometimes every hour.  Smith looks like he is doing great, but his numbers regarding the blood gases are rising every day. This is the amount of oxygen they have to give him and the number of breaths the ventilator has to give him.
It is urgent that these numbers go down and stay down.  His first 4 days of life, he was breathing regular air (like us) so we know his lungs can work.  But the last couple of days they have had to increase the amount of oxygen they give him.   Where this sounds like an okay thing, it is not.
To be specific, his oxygen levels need to come down to 21 and his pressure levels need to continually go down to the point he can get off the ventilator.  We know we serve a big God and this is just a small thing for Him to do for him.  We are believing that will be soon.  Honestly, it must be soon.
We are praying over him this word from God, “This is what God the Lord says —- he who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath to its people, and life to those who walk on it: I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand.  I will keep you …”  Isaiah 42:5-6a.  Please join us as we fight this new battle for Smith and again, thank you for letting us lean on you for your prayers.
    Expecting miracles,

    Proud Grandparents!

Today we got the opportunity to have our picture taken with our grandson, Smith.   He’s quite the celebrity in the NICU, Pod-H, so it was a pretty big deal to be photographed with him.    He’s the smallest one in his group, and of course the cutest!  (Maybe we’re just a little partial.)  He was taking a break here from his goggles, so we thought it was a good time to snap a pic.

He’s doing good today; just resting and chilling out.  He loves to cross his legs but has a little problem getting them uncrossed after he gets them there.  He waves his arms around and gives the nurses all kinds of trouble when they need to do things.  He does not like to be messed with!  Keep him and his other NICU buddies in your prayers. We are expecting miracles from God, for his lungs and the bleeds on his precious brain.  God is able!

    Update on Smith

    Family & Friends

Thank you for your prayers and thoughts. Yesterday we were given very bad news. Smith’s sonogram showed extensive bleeding on his brain. There are four levels of bleeding, four being the worse.

Smith was a three on his right side and a four on his left side.

Please pray for Smith. Please pray for Kori and I as we go through this terrible struggle. We love you and thank you for your prayers and support.

    God is still good,
    Jon

"Smith needs prayer for his oxygen regulation today. Please pray that his numbers stay in the 20s. They have been in the middle 30s and lower 40s. If he is going to get off the ventilator he has to stay in the 20s consistently. Thank you and God bless!"

    Day 6: Update & Prayer

Smith has had a good day. All of his vitals are steady. One cool thing that happened last night is his eyes opened for the first time. He was squinting because of all the light but he got to look at mommy and daddy for the first time!

He is also eating regularly. Every three hours he gets 1cc of breast milk. Which may not sound like a lot to you but for Smith it’s like eating a big mac!

Please continue to pray for stability with his vital signs.

Also, a major prayer request is for there to be no blood on his brain. On Thursday the doctors will do an xray to look and see. Please pray against any blood. Blood on the brain could possibly mean some developmental delays for Smith and we don’t want any of that.

Thanks for all of your support and prayers. Kori and I can feel your prayers and they carry us through the day.

    God is good,

    Jon

"Smith’s arterial line went into his left wrist successfully tonight. He no longer has to get pricked with needles when they need blood. No more sticks! Another answer to prayer."
